Q: I am worried about the statistics side of the course. What standard are students expected to be at before coming on the course?
A: Many people worry this but we do not expect students to come on the course with an advanced knowledge of statistics. We start at a basic level and teach as if students are learning for the first time. As well as lectures, students also learn from practicals and also tutorials. If you do have knowledge of statistics do not worry about us going back to basics as there are opportunities for you to study advanced statistics as part of your optional module choices in the second term.
Q: How late can I leave it before applying for the course?
A: Our places are filling up for this year. I would suggest you apply before June or latest July otherwise we can’t guarantee a place. If you are worried you can also contact us for details.
Q: Are the volunteer programmes that are offered within the South London or Maudsley NHS Trust definitely available for all students who want it? And how long do the voluntary positions last?
A: All students can apply for these voluntary positions but they will have to pass their CRB check and also get their honorary contract with the hospital processed before they start. Each student can negotiate the length of their placement but we do encourage students to commit to 3 – 6 months to this work. If you are a part-time student you can do a placement in your first and second year if you wish.
Q: Where do I find out about student accommodation and how much does it cost?
A: We have an accommodation service so please check this link for more information. http://www.iop.kcl.ac.uk/departments/?locator=858
Q: Will there be any opportunities for paid work at the university while on the course?
A: This will be difficult and I haven't heard our students talk of getting such posts. It might be worth checking NHS and university websites for up and coming temporary posts. Some students do make a bit of money volunteering as research participants so that is something to look out for on college noticeboards.
