Why Choose the Institute of Psychiatry

The Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) is a global leader in both teaching and research in the sciences relevant to mental health. The quality of our work is consistently rated as outstanding by the UK authorities responsible for distributing public money to support teaching and research. Our work encompasses almost the entire range of disciplines required to understand the causes of mental disorders, to develop new treatments and to evaluate their implementation at patient level, as well as at the level of services and national health and social care policies.

As a student at the Institute, you will be immersed in a vibrant, interdisciplinary research culture. You will mix with senior staff and fellow students working in complementary fields, joining a community dedicated to understanding the causes of mental disorders and to developing and evaluating new treatments. We have strong connections to the South London and Maudsley Foundation NHS Trust; many of our academics are involved daily in the care of patients and we consult patient representatives about planning and design of research.

Students also have access to the IoP Library, at the Denmark Hill Campus. This is the largest library in Europe dedicated to Psychiatry and its related disciplines, with a stock of approximately 40,000 books and 200,000 volumes of periodicals and access to a wide range of electronic journals and on-line information services.
